Aweber vs Getresponse (2021) — a Detailed Comparison

In this comparison, I take a close look at Aweber vs Getresponse to help you decide which of these email creation and sending tools is best for your business.

Below is an overview of the prices, a discussion of the main features, and a summary of why you can choose one of them.

But first...what do Getresponse Aweber actually do?

What do Aweber and Getresponse do?

Aweber and Getresponse are tools for:

mailing list hosting

creating attractive email templates

sending electronic newsletters to your subscribers.

They also allow you to automate communication with subscribers via the "answering machine".

Get leads. Get sales. Get growing. [2]

Autoresponders are electronic newsletters that are automatically sent to your subscribers in accordance with the rules that you define.

For example, immediately after signing up, a subscriber may receive a simple autoresponder from your company, which they use to welcome you to your mailing list. After a week, you can get a discount coupon on some of your products; and after three weeks, you may be asked to follow them on social media.

And so on.

However, this is just the tip of the iceberg: with such e-newsletter tools, you can do many other interesting things, which we will discuss below.

But first, a quick look at the prices.

Getresponse prices vs Aweber prices

Getresponse prices

There are four Getresponse plans:

Basic-This starts at $ 15 per month and allows you to send an unlimited number of emails to up to 1,000 subscribers

Plus-from $ 49 per month for up to 1000 subscribers

Professional-from $ 99 per month for up to 1000 subscribers

Max-contractual

A full-featured free trial that lasts 30 days is also available (this works with up to 1,000 subscribers). You can access the trial version at this link.

There are also separate pricing plans for nonprofits, but you should contact Getresponse directly through them.

The main differences between Getresponse plans include adding landing pages, webinars, and eCommerce, providing more features the more you pay (we'll discuss this in more detail below).

Aweber Prices

There are 2 Aweber plans to choose from: "Aweber Free" and " Aweber Pro.”

As the name suggests, with "Aweber Free" you can use the product completely free of charge. However, the lines are attached: It's free only for users with less than 500 subscribers, and all the newsletters you send with it contain Aweber ads. However, beyond these limitations, it's a pretty useful option for new companies that don't have a list yet but want to start email marketing campaigns. For more information on "Aweber Free" can be found here.

"Aweber Pro" unlocks all the main functions of the platform, and the price structure for this is as follows:

Up to 500 subscribers: $ 19 per month

501 up to 2,500: $29 per month

2.501 to 5000: $ 49 per month

5,001 to 10,000: $69 per month

From 10,001 to 25,000: $ 149 per month

If you have a list with more than 25,000 subscribers, you should get an offer from Aweber to determine your monthly expenses.

Discounted plans are also available for nonprofits (3 months free, 25% off after that) and students (20% off).

Who wins the prices?

When comparing Aweber to Getresponse, the basic Getresponse plans are probably the ones you should focus on, as they are similar to all Aweber plans in terms of features.

On the other end of things, Getresponse is by far the most cost-effective solution: If you have a list of 500 to 1,000 subscribers, look up your father's savings from 14 UAH per month ($168 per year), using the Getresponse-Email-plan instead of the Awebers equivalent.

For lists larger than 1,000 subscribers, each basic Getresponse plan is effectively $ 4 per month cheaper than the corresponding Aweber plan (an annual savings of $ 48).

In addition, Getresponse offers significant discounts if you pay a year or two in advance: 18% and 18%, respectively. There is also a 30% to 50% discount for nonprofits (with a more generous discount if you view the Getresponse logo on your website and let Getresponse sell you as a partner).

There is also a discounted plan with Aweber, but it's not quite as generous: If you pay annually, you save 14.9% before the regular plan.

However, there is no denying that the completely free Aweber plan makes the product very attractive to brand new companies.

Overall, I'd say Getresponse is the overall winner in pricing, but as we'll see below, it's definitely not the only thing you should base your decision on here.

Let's look at the functions.

Overview of the main functions of Aweber and Getresponse

Similarities between Aweber and Getresponse

Getresponse and Aweber offer similar basic functions, which are the most important:

  • Ability to collect data and post mailing lists
  • A wide range of ready-made, responsive e-newsletter templates
  • Autoresponder functionality that allows you to send automated email newsletters to subscribers at predefined intervals after logging in
  • Statistics on the percentage of subscribers who open their email, click links, or log out
  • The creators of the news, which allow you to create and edit electronic newsletters without any coding
  • Integration with third-party tools (for example, E-Commerce applications or CRM Services)
  • Landing page builder
  • main differences between Aweber and Getresponse

There are some Getresponse functions that are not available in Aweber:

Webinars

Significantly more advanced marketing automation

" Conversion Funnel"

And Aweber offers something that Getresponse hasn't yet introduced: AMP for email.

We'll discuss these differences in more detail later, but first let's look at something very important in email marketing: visual effects.

E-newsletter Templates

Aweber and Getresponse offer a wider selection of e-newsletter templates than their main competitors: 700 and Getresponse, respectively.

Documents provided simultaneously with Getresponse Aweber, as well as, Respond to everything-this means that you can configure the layout of your E-Newsletters automatically to the device on which it is displayed (phone, tablet, desktop, etc.).

However, the situation with email templates in Getresponse is a bit in the flow at the moment.

This is because a new version of the Getresponse email creator is currently being introduced, and accordingly, two sets of templates are available-one for the old email creator (500+) and one for the new beta version.

There are about 100 "new" Getresponse templates available, up to 700 Aweber-so Aweber wins on the quantity front.

In terms of quality, I would say that Getresponse templates tend to be a bit more attractive or modern than Aweber's (as long as you're talking about new ones).

Example of the Aweber template.

As for the "old" Getresponse templates, there is a wider selection — about 500-but to be honest, I would avoid them. This is because they tend to display incorrectly in the latest version of Gmail for mobile devices.

The new templates work great on all devices, and also look much better.

Web fonts in Aweber and Getresponse

popular email applications such as Outlook and Apple Mail are increasingly supporting the use of web fonts-and, accordingly, some leading email marketing solutions are starting to include them in their email editors.

This can help designers create newsletters that better match the branding used on corporate websites.

Aweber allows you to use a small number of Google fonts, which until recently was a win over Getresponse in the font department.

This is because Getresponse is used to restrict the user to use standard web-safe fonts in mailings (Times New Roman, Arial, Trebuchet, etc.).

This restriction still applies when using the old Getresponse email editor, but in the new beta, you'll get a wonderful selection of web fonts to choose from-hundreds of Google fonts, including all the funky ones (Google's font selection in Aweber is limited to some very bland ones).

Web fonts in Getresponse

A wide range of web fonts are available in Getresponse.

So this is a pretty big win for Getresponse in the font department.

AMP for email

One area where Aweber has an advantage over Getresponse — and in fact most other email marketing platforms-involves something called AMP for email.

Traditionally, e-newsletters were very static questions — a combination of text and images.

AMP for email changes all of this by allowing recipients to perform simple actions (like booking an appointment or RSVP-ing to an event) directly in an email (i.e. without leaving their email program or visiting a website).

In addition, email senders can embed dynamic content-think live poll results, weather updates, football scores, etc.

The" dynamic " nature of AMP email gives recipients a reason to return to them regularly-and turn email into much more powerful and engaging content.

The following video from Google serves as a good introduction to the world of AMP for email.

Note that to use AMP for email with Aweber, you will need the appropriate technical capabilities-the only AMP for dragging email available with Aweber is the image carousel.

But still, including AMP for email in the Aweber feature set is a really positive development-and a big credit to the company as an early adopter of the technology.

The best way to know if an app is for you is to try it out yourself — so you can work out the learning curve and determine if the product contains the exact features you need. Both Getresponse and Aweber offer full-featured free trials, which you can access via the following links:

Answering machine

As briefly explained above, autoresponders are emails that are automatically sent to your subscribers at specific intervals – for example, you can create an autoresponder program to…

10 minutes after someone has entered your list, you will receive a welcome

message exactly one week later you will receive a discount code

three weeks later you will receive an email with a certain product...

...and so on.

This type of email marketing is often referred to as a "drip" campaign.

Both Aweber and Getresponse are good basic autoresponder-functions defined to send an E-Newsletter based on time intervals (as in the example) or automatically based on user actions or data can trigger a response, i.e.,

join a specific list

to make

a birthday purchase.

However, for me, the Getresponse autoresponder functionality is significantly stronger. The scope of actions that allows you to trigger the sending of email newsletters is more comprehensive, and it's easier to set up these triggers based on actions in general.

Thus, the Getresponse autoresponder functionality now goes far beyond traditional Drip-style campaigns and is part of the "marketing automation"feature.

And talk about it....

Marketing automation

Getresponse recently introduced a feature called "marketing automation" that takes auto-responders to a much more sophisticated level.

So you can create complex automation workflows with Drag & Drop Builder — you basically set up an "automation flowchart" that tells Getresponse what to do when the user performs a certain action.

There are a large number of triggers that allow you to shape your automation workflow in Getresponse, but the most important ones include:

  • E-Mail opens
  • Links Clicks
  • Product Purchases
  • Abandoned Carts
  • Visited URLs
  • Changing the user data of the participant field

This means that you can fully customize the user journeys of your subscribers depending on how they interact with your email.

The video below gives you an idea of how it works.

Aweber offers something similar with its "campaigns" tool, but for now it's a very simple question that allows you to essentially tag followers and send certain follow-up emails based on the links you click.

Aweber Campaigns offers limited marketing automation features.

Aweber Campaigns offers you some marketing automation features, but as you can see in the screenshot above, automation is limited to sending messages, waiting, and applying tags.

As such, Getresponse is well ahead in workflow-based automation at the moment.

Getresponse  marketing automation.

Marketing automation in Getresponse is significantly more complex than in Aweber.

Importing data

As for the file types that can be imported with Aweber, you can enter data from the following file types:

  • XLS
  • XLSX
  • TSV
  • CSV
  • TXT

Getresponse allows you to import from the following file types:

  • CSV
  • TXT
  • VCF
  • XLS
  • ODS

Getresponse allows you to not only import the aforementioned file types but also import them from various third-party services.

On both platforms, you can also add contacts manually-either by adding individual contacts, or by copying and pasting contact lines.

Finally, Aweber and Getresponse allow users to be added to a specific autoresponder loop when they are imported, which is not the case for all competing systems.

One thing to consider when using Aweber is that it may take 1 Business day while the Import new list is being processed (if you have more than 10,000 subscribers). This is something to consider if you are in a hurry.

All in all, so the general thumbs up for both platforms is here when it comes to importing.

Single-opt-in and double opt-in

There are two ways to launch a mailing list: using the "Single opt-in" approach or the "Double Opt-in" approach For subscriptions.

If you use one selection method, the person who fills out your registration form will be added there and then to your mailing list.

In the event of a double (or" confirmed") opt-out, a confirmation email is sent to the person on your mailing list with a link that you must click on before subscribing.

Both approaches have their pros and cons. The main advantage of a single opt-out process is that it's easy for users to log in and maximize conversion rates; a double opt-out process is better at checking whether people subscribing to your list are using real email addresses and results in cleaner data and more accurate statistics.

I would say that both single-opt-out and double-opt-out processes have their place in email marketing, and it is crucial for the solution you choose to facilitate both processes. And the good news is that both Aweber and Getresponse allow you to easily choose your preferred method of selection, which is not the case for all email marketing solutions.

Integration with other systems

Both Aweber and Getresponse offer a decent choice of integration with other websites and applications. These include integration with very well-known services such as Amazon, Paypal, Salesforce, Facebook, and Twitter.

Aweber offers several hundred integrations to achieve approximately 100 Getresponse, making it a more flexible tool for integration with third-party applications.

It should be noted that some of the integrations for both products-especially for lesser-known services-involve setting up a connection between your accounts using a third-party synchronization tool such as Zapier or Pie Sync. It's not insanely complicated, but it might clear up a bit of trial and error.

(And while I love Zapier, sometimes there can be synchronization errors that then require manual intervention.)

Split Tests

General tests allow you to try different versions of your email for data segments and send the most powerful one to the rest of your database.

This can be done by testing different subject lines, different copies of email newsletters, or even different templates against each other.

Thanks to its" old " email editor, Getresponse allows you to test up to 5 variants of email newsletters against each other, making it better in this area than its main competitors (Mailchimp's entry-level plans make it easier to split-test 3 variants; Campaign Monitor only has 2).

However, the Getresponse tests for the new Getresponse templates are limited to headers only, which is not ideal.

Aweber allows you to test up to 3 variants of electronic newsletters against each other, but these general tests can include not only subject lines, but also content variants.

So this is probably a win for Aweber in the split testing department.

Data segmentation

One of the main reasons I usually prefer Getresponse to Aweber is because of data segmentation.

Getresponse and Aweber allow you to create data segments quite simply: you can use various filters to identify and store subscribers by certain criteria.

However, Getresponse beats Aweber when it comes to sending email newsletters to your segments. This is because Aweber only allows you to send email newsletters to one segment at a time.

For example, if you had a car owners mailing list with three existing segments: "red car owners", "blue car owners" and "green car owners", and you wanted to send an email newsletter to red and blue car owners in one go, you could do it very easily in Getresponse — you just mark the relevant segments and hit send.

But in Aweber, to do the same, you will need to create an entirely new segment with red car owners or blue car owners. This results in more manual effort and a larger list of segments to be towed through.

Similarly, excluding segments from the mailing list in Getresponse is much easier than in Aweber: after you have selected your list of recipients, you can simply set the appropriate segments or lists that you want to exclude from the mailing list. Aweber allows you to exclude mail lists, but, oddly enough, not segments.

If data segmentation is important to you, choose Getresponse.

Creating landing pages

Another area where Getresponse currently has an advantage over Aweber is landing pages.

Landing Pages or "Squeeze Pages" are web pages focused on one thing: data collection. They usually contain a form, some attractive images, and a small amount of text that express the benefit of sending your email address.

It's generally better to use landing pages for online ad campaigns instead of a form on your site simply because they're optimized for data collection (since they contain less content to distract users).

With both Aweber and Getresponse, you instantly get a landing page creator that lets you use a variety of templates and a drag-and-drop editor to create a strong landing page.

Getresponse's Landing Page Creator-Drag and drop editor for creating 'Squeeze Pages'

Getresponse's Landing Page Creator-Drag and drop editor for creating 'Squeeze Pages'

This Getresponse feature allows you to create an unlimited number of landing pages, view them to an unlimited number of viewers, and most importantly, run A/B tests in which you can try out up to 10 different versions of your landing page, with the system automatically identifying the most powerful one (so you can use your best landing page to maximize conversions).

While Aweber also has a landing page builder, it's more fundamental — multiple templates are available and there are no A/B tests, making it significantly less useful than the Getresponse equivalent. However, it has a more user-friendly interface.

Both Aweber and Getresponse allow you to add a Facebook pixel or Google Analytics tags to your landing pages to track ad campaign conversions. However, neither platform seems to offer a Cookie approval control that allows users to choose this tracking. This is not ideal in terms of privacy or GDPR.

Getresponse Webinars

The new Getresponse feature is ' Getresponse Webinars‘, and this is something you won't find as a feature of one of the main Hosting competitors: Aweber, Mailchimp, Mad Mimi et al. all of them offer this service yet.

By purchasing a Getresponse plan ("plus" or higher), you get the opportunity to run webinars directly in your Getresponse account. Since webinars are commonly used as a lead generation tool, it may be a very good idea to tightly integrate them into your email marketing application.

The Getresponse webinar feature set is also pretty good and similar to what you'd expect from dedicated webinar solutions.

The main features include:

  • option for multiple moderators
  • boards / Presentation design tools
  • Chat

screen shares webinar recording

As for the participant limits, the plus plan allows you to host a webinar with up to 100 participants; the upper limit of the professional plan is 300, and the upper limit of the enterprise plan is 500.

You can also buy webinar functionality as an addition to the" basic " Getresponse plan: $40 per month buys you a 100 member limit, $ 99 per month buys you a 500 member limit. (The 500 limit is the absolute maximum of participants — you can't pay extra to increase this.)

If you want to run webinars using Aweber, you need to use a third-party tool like Gotowebinar. This means additional costs, but on the plus side, there is an official integration for Gotowebinar for Aweber.

In terms of the quality of the Getresponse webinar function, it is surprisingly good. I didn't expect it to compare positively to other webinar tools I've used in the past, but after testing it, I was very impressed with both the user interface and functionality. You can definitely use it to run professional webinars, and the way this feature is so tightly integrated with email marketing features is brilliant.

This is definitely an outstanding Getresponse feature and is worth a try if you are interested in hosting webinars as part of your business. More information about the Getresponse webinars can be found here.

Transmission Time Optimization ('Perfect Time')

Getresponse includes a really sophisticated Send Time Optimization feature that is not yet available in Aweber.

This feature, called "perfect timing," automatically sends your email at the time it's most likely to open-Getresponse looks at your list of subscribers and email verification habits and makes that call on your behalf.

If you can live with this Big Brother technology, you can expect an average 23% improvement in opening rates and an average 20% improvement in click rates, according to Getresponse.

Aweber offers a feature called "send window" that allows you to limit the time it takes to send an automated email to a specific time window, but it's not as difficult as optimizing airtime, and it also requires a bit of footwork and statistics-to find out when the best time (overall) is to send an email to your list.

Conversion Funnel

The latest Getresponse feature is called "Conversion Funnels" and aims to transform the product from an email marketing platform to an all-in-one marketing and ecommerce platform.

The idea behind this is that you can do the following things without ever leaving the Getresponse environment:

Creating a product catalog

Creating and launching Facebook ad campaigns

Creating landing pages

Adding subscribers in a series of answering machine

Drive users to sales pages (also created in Getresponse)

Take the payment for the products (with a few leading payment gateways)

If necessary, send abandoned emails to the trash

As the name of the function suggests, I want to give Getresponse to you in one of the easiest ways to create a sales funnel, without the other tools needed (except for the payment system-Paypal, Stripe, etc.).). If you want, you can enable however third — party platforms-Shopify, Bigcommerce and Etsy can be integrated into this function.

Reputable e-commerce operators are better served by using more established e-commerce platforms like Bigcommerce or Shopify to sell products online, but this all-in-one approach may appeal to small businesses that are diving into online sales for the first time.

As with webinars and marketing automation, Aweber does not yet offer similar functionality.

Support

Both Aweber and Getresponse recently won Stevie Awards for customer support, which says good things about both companies ' efforts.

However, Aweber is the best option if you need phone support.

Unlike Getresponse — and indeed competitors Mailchimp, Mad Mimi, and Campaign Monitor-the company offers phone support (and a free download if you live in the US). Email and chat support channels are also available.

Getresponse previously offered phone support, but now only offers live chat and email support (unless you're in a "Max" plan at the corporate level). This is a shame, because when it comes to technical support, there are times in life when only a real conversation with a real person is possible.

However, Getresponse email support is available in 8 languages, while Aweber is only available in English.

Conclusion about support: If you think that you are the kind of customer who definitely needs phone support, then Aweber should think about Getresponse. If you need support in a language other than English, choose Getresponse.

Free Trial Versions

Both Aweber and Getresponse offer ways to try out their products for free.

Aweber allows you to use the free version of the "Aweber Free" product indefinitely — as long as your mailing list contains 500 or fewer contacts.

Getrepsonse allows a fully functional version of your product in 30 days to try if the list contains less than 1000 contacts.

The links for each free trial are listed below. As always with these comparisons, I always recommend trying both products to make sure you get the full personal experience of each platform:

Aweber vs Getresponse: Summary

Both Aweber and Getresponse offer a good selection of tools to help you create, maintain, and communicate with an email database. Even if you're technically not that far away yet, you shouldn't have too much difficulty managing electronic communication, and with both products, you can do it well. However, Getresponse is the winner in this shootout — it's much more of an all-in-one solution than Aweber, comes with significantly more advanced automation features, and is also slightly cheaper.

There are several areas where Aweber has an advantage over Getresponse: it supports AMP for email, integrates more easily with a wider range of third-party products, and provides phone support. And its free plan can be very useful for brand new companies without a mailing list.

Here's the last minimum on why you can choose one of these tools over the other.

Reasons to choose Getresponse via Aweber

The Getresponse 'Marketing Automation' functions currently offer similar automation tools based on Aweber - hands down workflows.

The product is more inexpensive (especially if your list of subscribers contains between 500 and 1000 entries).

An 18% discount is available if you pay for the product annually instead of monthly, and a 30% discount is available if you pay two years in advance. These discounts are more generous than the Aweber equivalents.

The built-in Getresponse landing page creator is more demanding than Aweber's.

The Getresponse "transfer time optimization" function can significantly improve the speed of opening and clicks — there is no equivalent functionality in Aweber.

The functionality of the webinars are excellent and, perhaps, is fabulous for any company that is using webinars for lead generation.

You can instantly sell products with Getresponse.

Customer support is available in multiple languages; Awebers is limited to English.
