Google announces Project Tango for mapping three-dimensional smartphones

ProjectTangoGoogle has announced the launch of its computer vision and 3D sensors project “Project Tango": essentially, a prototype smartphone with advanced 3D sensors. This new prototype not only has motion sensors, but actually allows 3D scanning, opening up many possibilities for computer vision and 3D mapping / navigation. The app that geoawesome people are most interested in-Internal Mapping & Navigation!

Google's Advanced Technologies and Projects Group allows developers to sign up to access these "Project Tango" smartphones to develop interesting apps for the device in the Indoor Mapping / Navigation, Games & more domain, and if you're interested, you'll need to submit your ideas to Google by March 14, 2014.

On the official Project Tango page, Google asks: What if you could capture the dimensions of your home just by strolling around with your phone before going furniture shopping? What should I do if the addresses to the new location don't stop in the direction of the street? What if you never get lost in a new building again? What if people with visual impairments were able to navigate unassisted in unfamiliar interior locations? What if you could find a product and see where the exact shelf is in the super store?

It's quite interesting to be able to move around inside buildings and have a visual perception of it all. Google isn't the only tech giant looking at 3D sensors and mapping; Apple acquired the 3D sensor company "PrimeSense" late last year. QualComm acquired GestureTek in 2011. With the advent of location-based apps and information, Indoor Mapping has become very important, and we will certainly see these 3D sensors and scanners become part of everyone's phone in the coming years.
